PHILADELPHIA (CBS)
— There’s always a slight awe in the eyes for the newcomers. They’re dazzled by the immense crowd at such an early time of the morning, taken aback by the clinging confetti in cleavage, the frothing crowd chanting, “Show us your …” and flying debris that can include everything from a sandwich roll to a toupee. But Molly Schuyler wasn’t fazed by anything. The only thing that bothered the tattooed Midwest mother of four was the chill that coursed through the back corridors of the Wells Fargo Center Friday morning. Otherwise, Schuyler treated Wing Bowl 22 like any other eating contest she’s devoured, vanquishing the field, which included NFL players, bodybuilders and former Wing Bowl champions. Schuyler ripped through a Wing Bowl-record 363 wings, smashing the previous mark of 337 held by international eating star Takeru Kobayashi at Wing Bowl 20, in 2012. PHOTOS: The Eaters Of Wing Bowl 22 Pat Bertoletti finished second with 356, Wing Bowl 21 champ Jamie “The Bear” McDonald took third with 304 and Jon “Super” Squibb came in fourth with 252, winning the local eater level. No one had a shot at Schuyler. She polished off 186 wings in the 14-minute first round, was just three shy of Kobayashi’s mark after the second 14-minute round and ate another 29 wings in the final two-minute speed round leaving everyone in her wake. Schuyler became the second woman to win Wing Bowl, joining Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, who won Wing Bowl 12 in 2004 with 167 wings. “To tell you the truth, I didn’t even think I was going to win this, I was looking and hoping to finish in the top three,” said Schuyler, who was going to catch a flight to Des Moines, Iowa Friday afternoon to compete in the IHOP Pancake Bowl I Saturday, then attempt to defend her title later Saturday afternoon at the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival. To call Schuyler an eating machine wouldn’t be just. How she rowed through the food was astounding. She chewed through the wings like mowing down corn on the cob. “I think I could eat some more,” kidded Schuyler, the Wing Bowl 22 crown skewed on her head. “This was freaking crazy. I kept eating and I kept saying I didn’t want to know how many wings I ate until the end. I just wanted to focus on what I was doing. But I don’t think I want to eat another chicken wing for a while. Hopefully I’ll be back next year.” PHOTOS: Molly Schuyler Eats Sebastian Jablowski, the “Polish Punisher,” won a Chrysler 200 by taking the college portion by downing 78 wings. Some of the floats arrived with imaginative flair. One float was a chicken coop made of actual chicken wire that had a woman heavily clad in facial makeup choking a rubber chicken. Perhaps the best Philadelphia-sports themed float was done by Dave Goldstein, US Male, who came in riding a Phillies’ themed float, calling himself “Ruin Tamaro.” In front of him was a geriatric group in walkers and power scooters, poking a little fun at the advanced age of the current Phillies. The biggest applause was garnered by Eagles’ center Jason Kelce, who apparently was serious about competing in Wing Bowl 22. Kelce arrived in an Eagles’ car, and in the back was Eagles’ head coach Chip Kelly. As Kelly walked through the staging menagerie, amid a row of double takes as he passed, one woman from a football float screamed, “Chip Kelly, you’re so hot!” Kelly laughed and shook his head. He made sure to extend a hand to everyone who recognized him. While others just gawked, viewing him like a sage. After one round, Kelce, with spots of hot sauce dotting his face, acquiesced after eating 65 wings. “The hardest part was the speed,” Kelce said. “I’m not used to eating like this this early in the morning. I’m usually eating eggs and bacon. But this was awesome. It was a great experience. But the speed got me. I’m usually not a fast eater, and I know I could have gone another 14 minutes eating. But the speed factor was killing me. I’ve never seen anyone eat as fast as these people. It’s amazing.” Phillies 2008 hero Matt Stairs was greeted affectionately with a huge cheer as the jumbotron showed Stairs’ magical two-run homer in Game 4 of the 2008 National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Then Stairs smashed two cans of beer together, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin style, and downed them. Where else can you see that at 7:30 in the morning? Brock's Wings and Things- Philadelphia Pa
Brocks Wings and Things
By:
CJ Ricciuti
Being a college student in North Philadelphia at Temple University, it isn’t always Ramen and cereal for meals. Some of the best food I’ve had in my life has come from this area and when there is a wing place merely feet from my apartment; I’m bound to give it a shot. Plus, as a Philadelphia sports fan, I am even more inclined to try it when former Eagle draft pick Raheem Brock owns it.
The outside of the place is honestly nothing to eye catching or extravagant. It’s located at 1600 N. Broad Street right in the middle of a strip mall. If you blink, you’ll miss it, and if you walk by it, you might miss it as well because you’ll be too busy trying to ignore the bums begging for food or a buck. Side note: watch out for the Lt. Dan hobo, he can get pretty feisty when asking for money and yes he has no legs. Like I said, I live merely feet from it and just realized it was there the other day and it’s been open almost a year. The inside is nothing impressive either. There was one TV in the whole place and it was on MTV Jams . Not a bad place to eat in if you are looking for a quick bit, but I would suggest doing take out, just my opinion.
To start off, they have a great selection of flavors for their wings. Of course they have the normal everyday flavors like regular, medium, hot and barbecue, but they also have some different flavors as well. Other flavors include Atomic, sweet barbecue, lemon pepper, garlic parmesan, General Tso’s, Cajun jerk, New Orleans, Chipotle, Asian sweet and spicy and sweet teriyaki. I decided to go with one of their more popular flavors and try the lemon pepper wings with a side of crab fries.
I knew it was going to be a good meal right away when they handed me a brown bag with grease spots all over it. I soon came to realize that it was because they left the fries uncovered in the bag. When I pulled the container out of the bag and saw the wings for the first time, it was almost like a good-looking girl giving you the green light. I threw the top off, stuck my face in, took a whiff and went to work.
The smell of lemon and black pepper hit my nose and I knew right away that I was in for a treat. All the wings were nice and even in size, not too small yet not massive, they looked great and weren’t completely drowned in sauce. I picked up that first drumstick, took and bite and knew I found something special. Super crunchy wing, great flavor and very juicy. I haven’t had a wing with such good flavor like this in a long time. There was just enough citrus to not overwhelm you and the little bite from the black pepper was a perfect endnote. The crab fries were decent, nice and thick cut, but no Chickie’s and Pete’s.
Price wise, the wings were on the average side. 10 wings will run you a little over 8 bucks, and 20 wings will run you about 14 dollars. I think this is a decent price for what you get. My meal, which was 10 wings, a side of crab fries and Gatorade ran a little over 13 bucks. For an average person that’s not bad. For a college kid, that’s like 5 cases of Top Ramen.
All in all, I would recommend this place if you’re in the mood for some good wings. The wings were some of the best I’ve had in a long time. I wouldn’t go out of your way for them, but if you are ever in Philly and feel like trying some place different, Brocks won’t disappoint.

Vegan Wings - Gunner's Run - Philadelphia Pa
By : Peter Cicali
How can I be a vegan and still eat wings? Vegan wings!! I have been vegan for over a year now and sometimes occasionally I miss eating wings. Over time the craving passes and I forget about eating wings until a few weeks ago I went to Gunner’s Run in Philadelphia. It seem like a normal bar where I thought I would have the normal bar food and thought I would be having my dinner as liquid form....beer! But no, to my surprise they have vegan wings on the menu! Vegan wings? What are they made of, are they truly vegan, vegan wings? Well they are vegan, made of seitan, made from gluten, the main protein of wheat. I decided to order some and see if they were any good. They had five different flavors to choose from, hot, bbq, spicy bbq, teriyaki, jamacian jerk. I decided to go with bbq and couldn’t wait until they came. After a little wait they came out hot and I started to dig in. The “wings” had a nice crunch to them, I am guessing they were covered with flour and deep fried. Did I mention they came with a vegan sour cream sauce? Well they did and it tasted amazing, just adding to the over all flavor of the wings. Even my brother who was with me and loves chicken wings said the vegan wings were better than the chicken wings. Overall the “wings” were great and I would highly recommend them to vegans or carnivores. It was also nice to be able to share a meal with people who are not vegan and like to eat meat. It is very uncommon that restaurants serve both options. So the next time you are in Philadelphia and looking for some wings check out Gunner’s Run, you won’t regret it and maybe if you are a carnivore you will give the vegan wings a try.
